Show Literary Club to Celebrate 72nd Birthday With Luncheon Moab's Women's Literary Club was 72 years old 0:1 'March 9, and club members are planning to celebrate their organization's birthday on Saturday, March 21, with a luncheon at 1 p.m. at the Greenwell Restaurant. A special program has been arranged by the committee in charge of the celebration; Mrs. Mars Pope, chairman, Mrs. J.W. Corbin, Mrs. Harold Jacobs, Mrs. N.S. Christen- sen. Mrs. Jue Wanie. Mrs. William Hines and Mrs. L. L. Taylor; all are past presidents presi-dents of the club Over the years, the cluu was responsible for forming the first reading library, they donated $2,000 to the new Grand County Library, worked work-ed for incorporation of the City in 1932, bought some cf the first fire hydrants and trash cans, heiped get the first board sidewalks in Mo- ab. They later were instrumental instru-mental in getting shale sidewalks side-walks for the town. Together with the Lion's Club, they worked for the first new courthouse and Junior Jun-ior high school buildings. The club from the beginning, has been known for its work in either spearheading or assisting assist-ing in community improvement. improve-ment. Just prior to the urar.-ium urar.-ium boom in 1952, they sponsored spo-nsored the naming and num bering of streets in Moab. In ' the past 15 years, they have won several prizes for Community Improvement Im-provement through the General Gen-eral Federation. One of these was for the establishment of the Moab Museum. For three years they worked with the Lions raising money for a civic center. Out of this project pro-ject a museum and library became a reality. At this time the club is working on encouraging the building of a rest home for the aed. If formation of the kernels found to be feasibble, the women will make a contribution con-tribution to encourage its establishment. es-tablishment. It is felt by many in Moab that the community towes a great debt of gratitude to the orgiinal 15 women who organized or-ganized the club, and to all club wemen since 1898, because be-cause of their aim of education, educa-tion, culture, and civic or community improvement. |
