Show For residents of Grand County who haven't made their New Year's Resolutions Reso-lutions yet, the Heart Association has a suggestion: sug-gestion: Resolve to reduce re-duce your risk of heart disease by taking better care of your heart. Dr. Alan Lindsay, President of the Utah Heart Association, says the best way to begin is by getting a complete medical checkup. "Your doctor can tell whether you're a candidate for heart attack or stroke. And he can prescribe the preventive measures you and your family should take to reduce your risK. An estimated 28 million mil-lion Americans have some form of heart and blood vessel diseases, the leading cause of death and disability in this 'country. They result in i more than 1 million deaths dea-ths every year. Many heart attack deaths could have been prevented if the victims or their families fa-milies had known or recognized re-cognized the early warning warn-ing signs of heart attack. Early warnings signs of heart attack are: Prolonged, opressive pain or unusual discomfort discom-fort in the center of the chest, pain may radiate to the shoulder, arm, neck or jaw, pain or discomfort is often accompanied by sweating, nausea, vomiting and shortness of breath may also occur, 9 sometimes these symptoms subside and then return. Other risk factors that can lead to heart attack and stroke are: high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, stress and lack of exercise, cigarette smoking and a diet high in saturated fats and cholesterol. Living a heart-healthy life isn't a hard resolu- Ition to keep. All you have to do is make a few moderate mo-derate changes in your lifestyle, such as having your blood pressure checked regularly, stop smoking cigarettes or at feast cut down, eating foods low in saturated fats and cholesterol and getting regular daily exercise. ex-ercise.
