The decrease is due mainly to the colder temperatures tem-peratures and at times heavy winds. Also on December 28th, three inches in-ches of snow fell which also contributed to the decline of visitation to the Park. On December 22, 1974, the restroom facility was closed for the winter and the fees discontinued. However, the pit toilets remain open at the point for visitors. ' The Belknajs publish I and sell river guide books from their West- water Books in Boulder, Nevada, as well as run I river trips in Sportyaks on the Green River Wil- derness area through Desolation Canyon. Belknap helped develop devel-op and test Sportyaks. In 1963 when the Glen , Canyon dam gates were I closed, only 1,000 feet I of water was left flowing ' through Grand Canyon. I Since a great many peo-' peo-' pie wanted to make trips j through the canyon, ' some kind of smaller j boat was needed. Bel-' Bel-' knap, working with the Park Service procured a fleet of Sportyaks and he, his son Buzz, Dock Marston and Mack Mil- ler tested the boats in i the fast water of the Grand. Mrs. Belknap i (Fran) kept them sup- plied by helicopter, fly-L fly-L ing in every day. The t river runners were lost L for a few days at one r point, but Fran finally i located them and dropped f supplied. Sportyaks are 7 foot r individual boats, molded of linear polyethylene r plastic. Most of them are orange, but some are other colors, and k Belknap's lead boat is green and white. The I Desolation run is best for these smaller boats, I since they are one-man do-it-yourself jobs, and P the rapids in that por-L por-L tion of the river are not ) as severe as those in L Cataract and Grand. r Fastwater Expeditions ran last year, and will r be on the river again i this year, based inBoul-r inBoul-r der City, Nevada, but putting in the river at Sand Creek or Ouray and running into Green River.
