A large crowd enjoyed the McArthur) i Senior Citizen Group Really Enjoys j 4fh Saturday Night in Each Month I By W. D. McArthur Saturday night and especially especial-ly the last Saturday or maybe the 4th of each month is set aside for a time of celebration. Saturday night since the calendar was invented has been the customary last day of the Week. A week in which everyone is supposed to have toiled and as the last day begins to wane, cares and troubles are set aside, so that soon a spirit of anticipation permeates those awaiting the time of "Sharing." Sharing in this case happens to be the monthly Pot-Luck dinner put on by Senior Citizens in the house donated to them by the County. The house at one ,time was a hospital but today it is not recognizable as one; rooms have been redone by those who are called Senior Citizens aid the skills accumulated over the years of aging have been utilized to the best advantage. Jhe living room is tastefully 1 furnished with a deep pile rug - - on the floor, lots of davenports, daven-ports, chairs and tables' complete the room with a T.V. in one corner. This is the only room in which a person is allowed to smoke. Another room houses a large size pool table, that is brand new. The old worn out one sets in a corner of the living room awaiting disposal. This pool room also houses the folding tables. In the back of the building ith a cement ramp leading to it is the center of entertainment. entertain-ment. On the night my wife ud I visited, shortly after 6 pm. we found a serving table t up loaded with Goodies, it son this that we placed our &h of food as our share of the meal. This room approximately 60 x 20 was prepared with tables set up to serve around 80 people and I believe that it was about that many persons who enjoyed the feast of turkey and trimmings. It mattered not the particular taste of any individual, individ-ual, enough variety was set to tempt even the most fastidious of gourmets. Before the meal was served Lois Lathrop asked for volunteers volun-teers to say grace but as no one spoke up Pearl Taylor was drafted for the task and it was after this that Lois's husband, Lathrop was found to be the one who carved the turkeys. Asked about it, he admitted that it was he who not only carved the turkeys but also sampled the meat at various times during the task. The tables after everyone had eaten were removed by the men and stored in the pool room but it was the ladies who folded the tablecloths and collected the table ware for -, washing in the. kitchen. The work seemed to be a collective enterprise and with ' chairs set around the walls and most everyone seated except the ladies who were doing the last minute cleanup, an old time, delightful quartet of musicians began to play. Music filled the room. Music full of nostalgia. Music that helped relieve the tensions ten-sions of the early settlers on their SATURDAY NIGHTS. Music that these Senior Citizens asked for and enjoyed. en-joyed. Music that must have brought back memories to some ladies and men who came by themselves. Music that was a part of the heritage of the west. Music to dance to or sit quietly in enjoyment as the ears and minds, filled themselves to completion. The room filled with music and couples dancing brought to mind that age has nothing what-so-ever to do with life. These Seniors enjoyed the evening and the dancing. The only sad fact was that there was not enough men to share the dancing with every lady present. Some couples were of the same sex but dancing was the rule and aim of the night. As one lady stated, "Women are the strongest sex. They outlive men." These Seniors have banded together to enjoy life and the amount of energy they produced pro-duced during the evening, if harnessed, would have kept the city glowing for hours. It wasamazingtoseesome Grandmothers in their 80' s dancing to lively tunes that after a few minutes sent their male partners to the side lines for a well earned rest. One oldster tried his best to dance every dance with a different partner but had to give up when he ran out of breath. j Young people have called j this type of music "SQUARE" j as well as those who like it but it was this music and these people who produced this country of ours and settled the i land.
