Show enough water capacity A large fire in downtown Moab Tuesday on top of watet rationing during the past week has raised serious questions in the minds of residents as to what kind of fire protection can be expected during a water shortage. Mayor Winford Bunce, discussing the situation Wednesday, expressed confidence in the ability of the, water system and fire department to maintain firefight-ing firefight-ing ability even during times of shortage. The Utah Insurance In-surance Service? Offices, formerly the Rating Bureau, has studied the situation and judged Moab's water supply sup-ply as adequate for fire fighting. There is a loca1 ordinance providing that all water be shut off when the fire siren sounds, thus providing; the full capacity of the city lines for use by the fire department. de-partment. Even if ihe city storage tanks were emptied, the Mayor pointed out, the water flow from wells and springs would be instantly available, providing some 1300 gallons per minute of water. With the installation of a new 1600 gpm pump shortly, that supply will be nearly 2300 gpm almost double present capacity. And on the far-fetched possibility that the pumps were out, the Citv water lines alone contain several hundred hun-dred thousand gallons of available water. The full cooperation of citizenry in shutting off heves at the sound of the f:re siren, coupled with an increased in-creased capacity of water pumping, give excellent back-no back-no to the fire finhting capabilities of Moab's fine Volunteer Vol-unteer Fire Department. |
