Show highway developments Recent developments in planning for th.e- nation's fast growing- interstate ''highway system could have some far-reach infr implications for Grand county. The state of Utah recently applied for the addition of a segment of current U. S. 50-6, between Woodsad? and Spanish Fork, as a supplemental 1-70 Route, which would give fasiter access for east-west travel to and from the San Francisco area of California. The alternate al-ternate would be in addition to t'he currently programmed program-med segment of 1-70 from near Woo-dside- to Cove Fort, which will give rapid access to the Los Angeles area . If accepted by the Federal agencies, this routing rout-ing could only benefit t'his section of Utah with not only heavier travel, but better transit 'to various population pop-ulation centers on the West Coast. A second proposal would extend 1-70 on through Nevada west from. Cove Fort. Fresently, that interstate- highway, which begins in Washington D. C. on the East Coast, ends at Cove Fort, Utah, where it joins Interstate 15. Extension of that highway westward west-ward would undoubtedly increase its popularity to east-west travelers. We support both proposals. The Interstate pro-gram, pro-gram, although feared by many communities, is opening open-ing up new vistas for many parts of our nation. Certainly, Cer-tainly, southeastern Utah, which has been historically isolated by way of highway connections with the outside, out-side, will be greatly benefited by the completed interstate inter-state highway system. |
