Show NOT THROUGH QUAKER METHODS. The first day's proceedings of the Peace congress con-gress in New York were not up to the highest standard. The sentiments expressed spoke admirably admir-ably for the hearts of those who spoke, but universal peace must be founded, if at all, upon law. It seems to us the inveighing against a great naval display at Jamestown was not a good point. Even universal peace cannot be brought about through .Quaker methods. We would have the display, with all its great ships and roaring guns; we would have, if possible, the United States and Great Britain foremost fore-most in that display, and when it was over, we would have the attitude of those powers that of an appeal for peace. - It would carry vastly more force with the knowledge behind it that those. powers were able to compel what they desire; that though they were both speaking with soft voices, each had a big stick behind iL |
