Show BOER WAR LEADER IS AN AMERICAN POSTMASTER NOW CHAMBERINO. N. M.. April 22. The United States Government has accepted Gen. Viljoen, the former Boer leader, as an American cltiaen, and has appointed him postmaster here.' Although this little lit-tle Mexican hamlet Is on the very outskirts out-skirts of civilization. Gen. Viljoen is contented, con-tented, and even happy. Soon after his arrival in the I'nited States he met a young lady in St. Louis, and after a brief courtship they were marrlel. The veteran veter-an BoMler is devoted to his young wife, and she is to him. Although Gen. Viljoen is only 38, his life has, been eventful. At 18 he joined In the rush to the gold fields at Rand; at 21 he was Public Prosecutor for the Boer Government; at 24 he was organizer for Boer militia, and held the rank of Lieutenant, Lieu-tenant, and in 1S96, when he was Major, he gained renown by nearly annihilating the men and officers of the Jamestown raid. For this he was made commander of the "Irreconcllables." steadfastly refusing re-fusing to accept amnesty at the price of swearing allegiance to the King. A few. faithful followers, bound to him by ties of blood, elected to accompany him into exile, and together they set sail for the "Land of the Free." arriving in New York In December, 1902. |
