Show Cc:;:id2i:ii:g tariff rEvisioii. ; I . ..The Governor of Massachusetts is interested in having a revision of the tariff. In that connection jie has written to the President and several members ' !f Congress. ! ' The New York Sun intimates that "Gov. Guild wants free' hides and free coal and all those free or fialf emancipated things in which the honorable and (progressive men of Massachusetts are interested." . The. Governor has received an equivocal .reply, from President Roosevelt, but from John Sharp (Williams of Mississippi he received a reply which, according to the Sun, incudes this paragraph: -"In my opinion, you might just as well look to leaded barber for an effective hair restorer to look to Ihe Republican party for any revison of the tariff in the direction di-rection of freer trade relations with the world. , In perhaps an exaggerated form Mr. Williams . . ihas expressed in that paragraph the impression .which is crystallizing into conviction, that the pres-. pres-. . ent managers of the Republican party -do not propose pro-pose to revise the present tariff to any great extent. If that conviction is formed and the matter, as .it stands at present, goes before the people next year, we shall come very near seeing what we saw in 1892 - a revision of the tariff turned over to its enemies, instead of seeing it worked out by its friends. V ! The party may be very confident ot its strengin ; . fwe think it has secured already the nine electoral yotes of Utah, Wyoming and Idaho, unless President Joseph F. Smith can make better terms with the Democracy next year than with the Republicans. It will be just as the exigencies of the case determine: , frhe President kept; his implied contract made in - 1904 and .held Mr. Smoot in his seat, for which his sense of honor in keeping his contract may be commended, com-mended, if nothing else. But that does not impose ,Wny obligation on the King of Utah, Idaho and "Wyo-Iming "Wyo-Iming to keep any contract which he has made, because be-cause he is not like ordinary men When it is neces- Bary he can get an order direct from Almighty God by wireless to burst any contract in the world. . f However, it looks now as though the Republican party can count on these three States, especially on Utah and Wyoming. Idaho is a little restive under present arrangements, and it will not be astonishing " if next year we see in that State the Mormons all Republicans and the Gentiles all on the other side, but, even supposing all three go straight Republican, and with them Montana, .still there will be some doubtful States. If the Republican platform declares that God is good and that the present tariff is one of his prophets, there will be many a Republican who will take the eround that while the smashing of tariff may bring around no end of confusion and no 'end of loss, still there come times when parties have Seen too long in power and that some discipline is 'needed. Parties sometimes are like patients who need heroic treatment, and that while the treatment may reduce their vitality and strength for the time being, it is the only way in which to save their lives. |
