Show TtliDUTCS PillD : TO THE DEAD Legislature Holds Memorial Services for the Late Representative Rep-resentative Taft and Clint B. Leigh. ' , - Utah through her Legislature bowed her head in respect: to. the memory of Representative Seth Taft and Clint B. Leijfb, whose live were lost at Bingham on Washington'! birthday. Memorial services were held in the House of Representatives halL Equal honors were paid the memories of the departed. r Present at the ceremonies was Mrs. Chrissie Pointer Leigh, widow of Clint B. Leigh, and her two sons, Philip and Ned. She was accompanied by her mother and E. B. Palmer. President Stephen H. Love of the Senate presided. With him on the platform were Speaker Harry S. Joseph and Gov. John C. Cutler. Tears welled in tne eyes or many at the close of the Rev. Peter A. Simpkin 's addTess, and Speaker Joseph's V0,1C choked with emotion as he was called upon to say a few words. He followed the Rev. Mr. Simpkin, and the contrast was most touching. JMeph ' voice, full of emotion, following the exquisite word painting of the parson. It struck home to the heart of all present. .. The services were opened by a short. E raver by the chaplain of the House, avid Hase of Davis county. The first speaker was Representative J. F.- Tolton, who praised both' Leigh and Taft. In eloquent terms the Rev. Mr. Simpkin Simp-kin spoke of the departed. He referred feelingly to the character of Mr. Leigh, with whom he declared he was better acquainted than with Mr. Taft. Mr. Leigh he declared he had known intimately inti-mately for several years past ' There is one lesson we must learn, ' said Speaker Love at the close of the Rev." Mr. Simpkin 's address. "That is that in the midst of life we are in death. It is now my duty to call upon up-on the Speaker of the House to say a few words on this occasion." Mr. Joseph, who ecarcely moved in his chair during tlte services, then arose, endeavoring to check his emotions. emo-tions. Since the aeeident he has been nearly prostrated with grief. The shock to his nervous system has taxed his energy en-ergy to the utmost. While his voice wavered, Joseph said: "The same maker that took from us these two noble souls, keeps us here." The Speaker then started out with a description of the trip that ended in death. He told, of his being snatched from death by Representative J. P. Miller. "I saw on the faces of my dear comrades com-rades as they lay on the track, not the look of despair, but a look' of calmness. calm-ness. "If there are any niches in the house of God, they ought to receive Seth Taft and Clint B. Leigh." He then told at length of his acquaintance with Mr. Leigh. John M. Davis, a member of the House and an intimate friend of Representative Rep-resentative Taft, also spoke, as did Representative Rep-resentative O. H. Thompson and Senator Sen-ator T. C. Oallistex. Gov. Cutler spoke briefly. 'In conclusion President Love said: "I have no doubt that this occasion will be indelibly stamped in our memories, mem-ories, and I hope that we will never for- et the families whioh have been thus ereaved, and always stand ready to do all in our power to aid and strengthen them." |
