Show .. . ' . trict Attorney Jerome today, it was expected.' ex-pected.' Dr.-Britton D. Evans, superintendent super-intendent of the insane hospital at Morris Mor-ris Plains, N.- J., is the principal insane in-sane expert for the defense, and not only proved an excellent witness on his direct examination, but while on the' stand enriched the English language with, a number of such expressions as "brainstorms," V metal fulminations" and "psychic explosrona." Jerome and .Dr. , Evans are not on friendly terms, as was evidenced the other day, when the District Attorney refused to shake hands with the alienist ali-enist in the courthouse corridor. This, together with Jerome's unusual knowledge knowl-edge of medicine, particularly as ap- f lied to insanity, made it .certain that he cross-examination would not be a fentle one. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw's or-eal or-eal is over; Dr. Evans' ordeal has begun. be-gun. Jerome's Hard Taak. That Jerome would have a more difficult" diffi-cult" task in his attempt to break Dr. Evans' testimony than he had with the defense's first expert, Dr. Wiley of Pittsburg, goes without saying. Dr. Evans is an old hand at testifying as an expert and has shown evidences of a ready witness and a facility in retort which might cause the District Attorney Attor-ney some trouble. - Dr. Evans was expected to. be followed fol-lowed on the stand by Dr. Charles G. Wagner, superintendent of the insane hospital at Binghamton, N. Y., who has also testified to examining Thaw several sev-eral times in the Tombs. Ths two experts will, in turn, be followed fol-lowed by Dr. Deemar and Dr. Bingaman who, it is expected, will testify as to the strains of insanity in Mrs. William Thaw 's family, and who will reach New York- Thursday for the purpose of testifying. tes-tifying. Mrs. William Thaw, Harry Thaw's mother, will go on the Stand to tell of the young days of her son, and it is expected that May MeKenzie, the chorus girl friend or Evelyn Nesbit Thaw, will testify as to conversations she is said to have had with Stanford White and repeated to Thaw, in which it is claimed White laughed at the love of Thaw for his wife and said it would not be long until she returned to him. Miss McKenxie to Speak. Miss McKentie will probably come in for a bad half hour when her cross-examination is called. Several alienists will take the stand for the defense, for purpose, it is expected, of testifying that Thaw is now insane. The defense r task does not end with proving that he was insane at the time of the homicide. homi-cide. It must prove that he has since recovered and that he ean safely be set free. Evelyn Nesbit Thaw left the sland yesterday afternoon with her story practically unbroken. To be sure, Jerome Jer-ome brought out a number of facts which do not redound to the credit of the young woman and which may even be said to reflect on her credibility. Whether her credibility has been sufficiently suffi-ciently attacked to create doubt in the minds of the jury as to her telling the story to Thaw that is said to have unhinged, un-hinged, his mind, is matter that only the verdict can decide. The verdict also can only decide whether the relations which existed between be-tween Thaw and Evelyn Nesbit after she told him her story were such as to raise a question regarding the sincerity of . his feeling for her and create a doubt as to the claim that his act was the result of constant brooding on her wrongs. Just what the court will allow him to show cannot even be guessed at now. EVANS A F0EIIAN WELL WORTHY OF . JEROME'S SKILL NEW YORK, Feb. 27,-r-Another medv ical expert would be served up to Dis- |
