Show JOHN RAISES HELP IN DENVER Salt LaKe Bandmaster Has Involved Colorado Women's Wo-men's Clubs and Legislature Legisla-ture in a Big Row. i. . Prof. 'John Held and his band stirred up more trouble in Colorado during his trip there to the Elks' convention in 1906, than all of the Women's clubs, the State Legislatures and the newspapers combined can settle. set-tle. - , . Prof. Held had with him a piece of music called "Where the Silv'ry Colorado Colo-rado Wends Its Way," a ballad written writ-ten by a Denver mail-carrier. The Held band gave a concert in the lobby of the Brown Palace hotel itnd one of th.e feature numbers on the program was this ballad. It was so arranged that it was played as a comet solo with band accompaniment. accompani-ment. While this was- being done a brass quartette slipped away from the band and -when the song was finished played the chorus from a distant corner cor-ner of the hotel. The effect was electrical elec-trical and the band had to play it over and over again. Senator Taylor of, Glen wood Springs, was one of the listeners. He became Infatuated with the pretty melody and resolved that it should be made the State . song. Accordingly a bill with that object in view was introduced at the present session of the State Senate. That started the trouble. A prominent society woman of Colorado Colo-rado Springs, who has money to burn, had written a song! entitled "Colorado" "Colo-rado" and she decided that she wanted to make it the State song. Influential members of the Legislature were interested in-terested and another bill was introduced intro-duced into the House. Then the society women, the club women, wo-men, the newspapers, the Senators and Representative, the band and orchestra orches-tra leaders and the people took sides. "Where the Silv'ry Colorado Wends Its Way" was knocked because the Colorado didn't wend its way in the SUte. But a little thing like that can be overcome so a bill was introduced to change the name of the Grand and Green rivers to Colorado. The Utah Legislature will be petitioned to sanction sanc-tion the changing of the name of the Green river in this State also. Then the knocker .got busv on the Colorado Springs song and said that a selection from Brahms was not what the State wanted. In the meantime the orchestras are playing the different songs, they are being called for as features at public banquets and everybody every-body old and young, musical or not, has a hand in the fight. It has about been decided to have a joint session of the Legislature and have both songs sung before that body. The vote then will be taken on them. |
