Show GAMBLERS PAY $420 IN FINES JUDGE BOSONE ADDS TEETH TO -CLEANUP DRIVE 25 Men Arrested in Seven Raids Draw Penalties Adding action to previous assertions asser-tions of "open gambling'' in Salt Lake City, City Judge Reva Beck Boeone Wednesday held a field day on horse players and other offenders offend-ers in police court, assessing fines and bail forfeitures totaling $420. Twenty-five men, charged with offenses dating back to October 11, paid fines or forfeited bail in amounts ranging from $5 for players play-ers to ISO for gamekeepers. A month ago. Judge Bosone charged that "gambling exists openly open-ly in Salt Lake City and if more police are needed to enforce the law. then that's what we need." All the cases heard Wednesday In police court had been continued "in order that justice might fall on all accused," Judge Bosone said. Seven Raids Made The arrests were made in seven raids by Captain F. A. Thacker and S. D. Beckstead of the police morals squad. Frank Stevensen, 80, arrested October Oc-tober 14 at 410 South West Temple Tem-ple street on bookmaking charges, forfeited $90 bail. Arrested October 11 on bookmaking bookmak-ing charges at 28 East Second South street, M. L. Fallon, 30, was fined $40. and Abe Rosen. 47, fined $10. Charged with bookmaking when arrested on November ft at 419 Felt building, John Garrity, alias John Rogers, 30, was fined (40, and A. Steifel, 65, was fined '$10. A raid on a poker game at 2 West Second South street November Novem-ber 24 resulted in arrest of four men, who were fined Wednesday as follows: C. W. Derkln. 60, $28; C. Ryers. 58. $5: Earl Davis, 34, $5: and R- Evans, 48, $5. Forfeitures of cash bonds were made in each case. Fined for Gambling Charged with operating and participating par-ticipating in a poker game when arrested on December 9 at 49 East Second South street, George Rogers, 29, was fined $30 and four companions com-panions were assessed $5 each on resorting charges. They were Charles Hast, 27; Ben Jamison, 40; Harry Brown, 60, and Frank Jones, . Another poker game raid on December De-cember 10 at 83 East Second South street brought arrest of four men, who drew fines as follows: Jack Reynolds. 38, $50; Vic Kelly, 44, $10; John Lund, 23, $10, and Don Armstrong, 23, $10. Draw Gambling Fines Arrested on December 16 while allegedly engaged in a poker game at 246 South Main street, George Kaufman, 24, was fined $33 and the following companions $5 each on resorting charges: Joe French, 84; Frank Jones, 36, and Harry Smith, 57. Charged with operating an alleged al-leged "barbeaut game," a Greek dice game, at 66 West Second South street, when arrested on December Decem-ber 20, Pete Pappas. SO, was fined $40, and John Cal las, 42, and Georgs Manos, 31, were fined $5 each on resorting charges. |
