Show Car Makers Have a Stake JUST what stake the automobile industry has in carrying on or subsidizing many of the safety crusades going full blast in. various sections sec-tions of the country has been made very clear by Dr. Miller McClintock of Harvard. Getting rid of traffic congestion and making the streets and highways safe would open up a great new market. He states from his findings that despite high speeds which are being built into modern automobiles, the best speed a motorist can make driving through the average city is slightly less than 30 miles an houe, This is due to traffic congestion. It does one little good to drive a car capable of high speeds, if the traffic stream compels one to poke along at such a pace. And it emphasizes the problem which traffic engineers are facing. Dr. McClintock has suggested sug-gested that five or six milion new auto buyers would come into the market if city traffic congestion con-gestion could be relieved. It is certain that the disastrous toll of fatal accidents would be lessened. |
