Show Silence Reigns in Washington XTEWS from Washington that the congress has ll adjourned, not to meet again until January 3, is Santa Claus' gift to the nation. It has been windy and fruitiest aession. When the call for the special conclave was Issued, hope marched acroaa the entire national scheme. The hope was that it would take final action on disturbing legislation, the lack of which was destroying confidence by the slow processes of attrition, with effects that reached every classification of citizens. The big shots, the average man. the humblest worker and the army of unemployed wanted to know the worst if wont was to come, to know the best if the best waa to come What most was wanted was light where there was only darkness. But in the showman's show-man's parlance, congress laid an egg an infertile egg that all the nation's hens and all the country's coun-try's incubators couldn't hatch. Not one piece of legislation of national importance im-portance was enacted and aent to the White House for signature. Such matters as were passed were passed in differing form by both houses and sent to conference. At this time many dif-ferencea dif-ferencea appear irreconcilable and when the regular session convenes what amounts to a new start from scratch is in prospect By no means of national importance, one bill was hastily enacted and speedily sent to the White House for the president to autograph. This was the bill appropriating travel expenses for members who wished to go home and have a look at their fences and eat turkey with the homefolks. But those who stay In or around the capital will collect their pro rata, though they only occupy their time with logrolling. In a time when so much constructive work could have been done, the politicos warred, revolted, re-volted, filibustered and behaved as self-serving politicos would be expected to behave. Meanwhile Mean-while a disturbed country has been only further disturbed and no man can know what of the future. |
