There Is no doubt that a million' horse lovers are pulling for Sea-biscuit Sea-biscuit to win. People who bet against the gallant old campaigner campaign-er last week stood and shouted when he burst across tha finish Una the victor. They'll do ft again this week If a Seabuscult triumph comas to pass, only louder, and then again louder. But The fact remains that the star of the C S. Howard stable failed by a nose to win the Santa Anita classic In 1937 from Rosemont, and failed again in 1038, by another an-other nose, to Stagehand. It seems like asking a lot to believe be-lieve he can do It In 1940. As courageous and sturdy aa he Is, Seabiscuit, It would appear, can't be . any better than he waa two years ago; particularly after an Injury that put him on the shelf for almost a year. He Isn't growing any younger. Those legs which pumped him to victory after victory and Into the hearts of millions throughout the nation can't hold up forever. Consider the cold figures of the weights. Seabiscuit must carry 130 pounda In the mile and one-quarter one-quarter grind. That waa the weight he carried against Stagehand. Stage-hand. True, Stagehand, a colt, packed only 100. But in 1937 Sea-biscuit Sea-biscuit carried 114 pounds and Rosemont 134. There probably is no Stagehand (ContaweS ea UM Follow Los rasa) 'Biscuit Faces Severe Test (OeatieaeS Fro Prmsita lae to worry about this year, however. how-ever. Featherweighted candidates, candi-dates, at this date, don't seem to figure. Outstanding Rivals There are others of known merit, though, to which the 'Biscuit must give weight. Including Heelfly at 114 pounds; Specify, 116; Which-cee, Which-cee, 114; Don Mike, 112, and Can't wait, which must be reckoned with st a mere 108 and a liking for the distance. There Is Kayak II, too, at 129, the ao-oalled solid candidate to repeat re-peat hie 1939 win In th Santa Anita. But a Kayak victory over Seabiacuit wouldn't be so hard to take, because he's In the Howard family. Maybe Seablscult can go on and win the hundred grand, and maybe may-be he can't If he does, he'll be the wonder horse of the age. There are a lot of people, this observer included, who think that he has already earned that title. |
