Gunners Fire Salutes As Day's Feature Founders of the University of Utah were psld a tribute Wednesday Wed-nesday by 4500 students who, with Instructors st the school, stood at attention in a one-minute one-minute salute to these men. Members of the university R O T C, in uniforms, formed lines on two sides of a cannon, fired to signal the opening and closing of the salute. Cadet Lleutensnt Colonel Vernon Ver-non Proctor was In commsnd of the gun crew. Members of the crew were Barr M. Musser. Clifton Clif-ton Ivsn Johnson, W. Howard Pratt and Waldo Henrlchsen, csdet privstes. SO as to svold a conflict with the regular changing of classes by the students, the time for the salute was set ahead 15 minutes to 10:45 a. m. Instead of 11 a. m. as originally plsnned. The university was founded 90 years ago Wednesday, first being known as the University of Desyrel. Des-yrel. Founders' day observances sre being held throughout the week. As a feature of Wednesday's program. Miss Muriel Ruby Jones, student body historian, and John Robert Morton, second vice president, went to the home of Dr. George Thomas, president of the school, and presented him with carnations. Because ot a slight illness, Dr. Thomas was not in his office during the morning. morn-ing. Winners of s Founders' day orstoricsl contest were announced. an-nounced. Douglas Hardy, son ot Mr. and Mrs. William W. Hardy, 1393 Thirteenth East street, snd Virginia Weilenman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Weilenman, 1075 Denver street, were awarded award-ed $25 each as the winners. |
