What sort of person is the "sverage" American husband? A. For one thins;, he is relatively rela-tively young, since nearly one third are under 35 years of age. At the other extreme, about one fourth are 55 or older. Ninety per cent of those 55 and over have been married for 15 years or more. Professional alarmists to the contrary, the typical American husband ia fairly stable. In fact, all but 39Sf of married men live with their wives. These Include men employed away from home or temporarily absent for reasons other than marital discord. Only t of those under 35 have been married before. The number Increases, however, with advance in age, so that for all ages 13 have been married more than once. Although these figure reflect our high divorce rate, it' worth noting that many of the older men were widowed, rather than divorced di-vorced before their remarriage. Moreover, many second marriagea are successful: mors than one fifth of the remarried husbands are married at least 20 years. Q. To what extent does the "average" "av-erage" husband take care of family fam-ily responsibilities? A. Latest figures show that fully one half of American husbands hus-bands provide for one or more dependent de-pendent children as well aa for their wives. Family responsibilities responsibili-ties reach their peak for husbands at ages 35 to 54 years, -when one fourth of them have three or more dependent children, a like proportion propor-tion have two, and nearly one fourth have one young child In their care. But even at the older agea, when five out of every six families have completed the task of bringing up children, American husbands still provided for two and one third million dependents under 18 years of sg.
