Today, re-search re-search worker have reported several cures of tuberculosis of the skin, tuberculosis tuber-culosis lupus, when treated by calciferol (vitamin (vita-min D2), two of which I men- Dr. Barton ttoned in previous previ-ous articles. Ia "Laval Medical," Quebec, Canada, Dr. E. Gaumond reports ths results of two years treatment with calciferol of 20 patients, 10 men and 10 women between the ages of 24 and 65. Heavy doses were given three times during the first week, medium doses' twice a week for the three following weeks, and then with small doses once a week for more than a year. A diet poor or low In calcium (lime) and table salt la recom- mended duringtreatment with calciferol. The results were as good as those obtained by previous Investigators. In-vestigators. Of the 20 patients under treatment with calciferol, the skin eruption gradually disappeared dis-appeared and general health Improved Im-proved In 18 patients; a few small tuberculous lumps persisted in the two other patients, When calciferol was first given, the skin irritation was greatly increased, showing that the drug was hitting the mark. Few Reactions We are all aware of how the removal of Infected teeth and tonsils ton-sils stirs up rheumatic and other condltiona before full recovery. Also how certain drugs applied to an old sore will greatly Irritate the sore, and then It heals rapidly. Tha patients taking the calciferol had few or no other reactions from it, although the investigators havs not as yet discovered just how it acts in the body. These findings by Dr. Gaumond Gau-mond are in line with those obtained ob-tained by British and American physicians of whom I wrote a few months ago. These physicians found thst streptomycin, the new wonder drug, sdded to the calciferol, calcif-erol, gave excellent results in many eases where the calciferol seemed to hsve carried the cure a certain distance or time (about 10 months to a year) and then did not help any longer. The adding of the streptomycin is apparently Just what is needed to complete the destruction de-struction of the tuberculosis organisms; organ-isms; calciferol alone can only do so much.
