Show Publicity Demanded by the People. The joint committee of the Legislature which was appointed to conduct the State Industrial school investigation made a wise change of policy when it decided to rescind its action in arranging for a star-chamber inquisition and make the inquiry open to the public. These able legislators no doubt forgot for-got for the moment that they are simply servants of the people and that the people are entitled to full information concerning the evidence obtained in connection with the charges made against the management man-agement of this State institution. Secret investigations investiga-tions of this kind are always to be deplored. If the officials of the reform school are innocent they are entitled to the. greatest publicity being given the developments of the inquiry. If they are guilty, then the people of the State have the right to demand de-mand publicity. The public as a rule is suspicious of these star-chamber affairs. There is nothing to be gained by secrecy vand through publicity not only the accused officials but the investigators are placed in the right light before the public. Let us have no dark-lantern methods. Let everything be done in the open. |
