Show GORMAN RESUMESJWAY OVER PARTY nomination of Dr. Crufn to be Collectoi at the port ef Charleston la taken up by that committee. A similar demand probably will be made la s all the ' cases In which committees have charge of nominations over .which there may be controversy. The caucus was lni session for -almost two hours. WASHINGTON, March 7. Senator Gorman has taken hold of affairs on the Democratic .side of the Senate. His selection se-lection as chairman; was made unanimously unani-mously by the caucus yesterday. There was a general feeling that the vacancies caused by the retirement of Democratic Senators from committees which have to deal with questions before be-fore the present called session should be filled, and it was directed that the designation of the members of these committees should be made by a steering steer-ing committee to be appointed by the . chairman of the caucus, but that their selection should later be ratified Ijy the caucus. Later in the day Mr. Gorman named the steering committee. It consists of Senators Gorman of Maryland, Cock-rell Cock-rell of Missouri, Martin of Vlnrlnla, I Bacon of Georgia, Dubois -of Idaho, I Money of "Mississippi, Ealley of Texas, Blackburn of Kentucky and Tillman of South "Carolina. The caucus placed in the hands of the steering committee authority to decide de-cide for the Democrats whether there should be a general reorganization of the Senate committees or the mere filling fill-ing of vacancies on -those committees which will deal with pressing questions during the extra session. - The committee is empowered to negotiate ne-gotiate with the Republican steering committee with a view to agreeing on a general reorganization, but, so far as there was expression of opinion en this point, it was favorable to. the view of leaving the question of .reorganization .reorganiza-tion on general lines to be determined by the Republicans, : as .they are' In power. There is no doubt, however, that the Democratic .steering committee commit-tee will insist upon having some of the committees filled, for' the reason that the Dinrocratic party has lost, quite heavily fc-ome of the. committees t i ' '. - which are 'tri control of present bust-nessi bust-nessi - - ' ' - - They will ask. for Instance, that the vacancies on the Committee en Foreign Relations be filled. Senator Bailey retired re-tired from this committee before the adjournment of the last Congress, and by unanimous consent Senator Clark of Montana was appointed to the vacancy. va-cancy. It is expected that the steering committee will confirm this action, and will also name a successor to Senator Rawlins on the same committee.. It is ' thought necessary to have these vacancies va-cancies filled immediately, as that commit com-mit tee will have to deal with the -pending treaties. They also will ask that the Democratic vacancies on the Committee Com-mittee on- Inter-oceanle Canals caused by the retirement- from the .Senate of Messrs. Harris and. Turner shall be filled. . , ' . . . " . -. '.. : It' Is also' probable that they, will ask the places, vacated -by. Senators Vest and Turner on.he Committee on .
