Show BREAD AS A CLUB. French bread Is not only a food, but is also a weapon of warfare. It demands de-mands no particular respect Just ber cause It is going to be eaten. This fact we saw demonstrated before we had been in Paris fifteen minutes. ' It was early in the morning and the funny little square carts containing yard lengths of bread were being trundled trun-dled from door to door by boys who think that time never passes, but takes off its hat and very politely waits for everybody. One of these youths, wearing the usual colorless blouse of the working-man, working-man, strolled out from a doorway and saw an- innocent-looking dog sniffing at the wheels of his cart Out came a loaf of bread from the cluster that was sticking, end up, in the cart. Crack went the bread, over Mr. Dog's back. After this performance the boy carefully care-fully arranged the bread in its old place among its companions. A loaf of bread is of such convenient size that it takes the place of a club. Exchange. |
