Show ANTI-SNELTER UNION FORMS farmers Organize to fight Smelters in the Criminal Courts. A committee of farmers composed of Alex E. Lee, George M. Spencer and "William Player called on County Attorney At-torney Christensen yesterday and requested re-quested that criminal prosecution be brought against the smelters with a view to closing them. A union has been organized by the farmers, who declare the smelters a nuisance nui-sance and clahft that the fumes from them are destructive to crops end fruit and to the health of the residents as well. Several complaints have been filed lately by different farmers who claim damages In a considerable sum. County Attorney Christensen promised prom-ised the members of the committee that he would Investigate the matter thoroughly andythat he would do all in his power to adjust matters for them. He will either decide to prosecute the smelters, or let tne damage suits now pending test the case. -It was-said yesterday by one of the officials of one of the largest smelters that a prosecution could not be brought against them with any degree of success. suc-cess. Under the present system of treating ores the smelters have to emit smoke from chimneys, and there ls.no way in which they can be lawfully prosecuted for this, they say. |
