Show Attitndt of Crttfitor Nations. When Tennyson wrote "The jingle of the guinea helps the hurt that honor feels," he was a young . man but he had an inspired knowledge of the world. In the case of France we have an illustration of what not only individuals but an entire nation will do for the sake of money. France is the ally of Russia. Rus-sia. Were we to believe what the French press says we would think the sympathies of the French people were entirely with Russia, but the French press is mercenary and not at all representative of public opinion. The truth is that France has loaned large sums to Russia at good interest. That is the reason of her friendship for the Bear. Yet France is a liberty-loving country and undoubtedly her people would like to see a successful revolution in Russia. Not so her Government and her financiers. They hear only the jingle of the guinea. Turkey has been a disgrace to the civilization of Europe for years. She has committed crime after crime that should have been punished by the other powers, but she has never been molested. The reason rea-son is that she owes most of them money. It is fortunate that the United States is not a creditor nation in the sense that many of the European Euro-pean countries are creditors. The United States is lending money abroad, but it is done through individuals. indi-viduals. She iB not bound by it to ally herself with . an iniquitous nation and to be an accessory to the crimes committed by it. |
