Show ICE DOES DAMAGE AT ROCKAWAY BEACH NEW YORK. Feb. ll.-Much damage has been done to summer cottages, wharves, landings and boathouses along Rockaway beach by the heavy ice and the action of the tide. Iosses already have reached $.;0,000, and when the spring thaws occur the amount will be greatly increased. The Ice freezing thickly around the piles upon which the cottages are built has been gradually raised by the tides, carrying piles and all upward. In consequence conse-quence cottages have been tilted on one end. and some have been almost overturned. over-turned. Some wharves have been uprooted, up-rooted, -while frail boathouses have been demolished. At some poiite the blocks of ice are four or five feet thick. |
