Show 'Deadline At Dawn," Will Be Shown Locally How a romantic young sailor, a cynical taxi dancer, and a benevolent ben-evolent cabby spend a night of horror in an attempt to sift thru the city's million and find a murderer mur-derer is the prime situation in RKO Radio's absorbing melodrama, melo-drama, "Deadline at Dawn," coming com-ing to the Rivoli Theatre Friday and Saturday. Susan Hayward, Paul Lukas and Bill Williams co-star co-star in this screen adaption of William Irish's best seller, with the Clifford Odet's screenplay directed di-rected by Harold Clurman. Interest is stimulated from the start when Williams, as the young sailor, is found one night, in mid-Manhattan mid-Manhattan with a large sum of money in his possession and trying try-ing to piece together the events about which his mind is a complete com-plete blank. Wandering into a dance hall, he meets Miss Hayward. Under the girl's questioning, he recalls being fleeced in a crooked card game in a cafe, after which, the cafe owner's sister invited him to see her home, where he had a drink. The sailor and dancer engage a cab driven by Lukas, who becomes interested in their adventure. When they get to the woman's apartment they find her murdered. murder-ed. The mystery grows deeper as such arresting characters as a blind pianist, a drunken baseball player, a man with white gloves, a crippled girl and a collarless man are encountered in the quest. Featured are Joseph Calleia Osa Massen, Lola Lane and Jerome Wowan. Adrian Scott, who was responsible for the successful "Murder, My Sweet" produced "Deadline at Dawn," under the executive supervision of Sid Rog-ell. |
