Show FOREST RANGER TELLS HOW TO CONTROL FIRES Dry cheat grass in the foothills of this district has created a serious seri-ous fire hazard that could destroy many acres of valuable timber and watershed land if set on fire, according ac-cording to Merrill Nielson, local forest ranger. Mr. Nielson says that over 90 per cent of the fires occurring on the national forest areas are caused caus-ed by human carelessness. This year there is a particular hazard due to the hot,, dry weather of the past few weeks. Grass has dried out earlier than usual, creating creat-ing a danger to all watersheds adjacent to Utah valley. Under the state fire, law, Mr. Nielson pointed out, "It is unlawful unlaw-ful to set fires within a fire district dis-trict (which includes all of Utah county) between May 1 and October Oc-tober 31, without first getting a permit from the Utah county sheriff.". sher-iff.". This means that fires cannot can-not be set on private land or anywhere any-where without first obtaining a permit to burn. Mr. Nielson urges all people to be careful with fire and for parents par-ents to keep their children from playing with matches in the dry foothills. In the past there has been some very bad fires which (Continued on Page 8) i Forest Ranger Tells How To Control Fires (Continued from page one) became so large before being brought under control that serious seri-ous damage was done to watersheds water-sheds and range land. Mr. Nielson says that everything every-thing is being done to prevent fires and to hold them to a minimum if they do get started.
