Show SERVICES TODAY IN 4TH WARD FOR WM. G. BLACK Funeral services for William Grant Black, 91, well known church worker of Springville, who died Monday, will be conducted today, Thursday, at 1 p. m., in the Fourth ward chapel. Friends may call at the A. Y. Wheeler and Sons mortuary Thursday until time of the services. Burial will be in the City cemetery. Mr. Black died unexpectedly of a cerebral hemorrhage at his home, 490 East Center street. He had been in comparatively good health and had attended church services on Sunday. He was born Jan. 11, 1875, at Nephi, a son of William and Amy Jane Washburn Black. He received his education in Nephi schools and when a young man learned the milling business. He constructed three mills at Fruitland, N.M., and Round Valley and St. Johns, Ariz. He also hauled the first merchandise merchan-dise by them from Albuquerque, N.M., then the railroad terminal, to St. Johns. Attacked by Indians During one of these trips he was attacked by Indians and barely escaped with his life. He also helped to build the railroad through Arizona. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had served as bishop's counselor coun-selor to three bishops for a period of 14 years; was superintendent of Sunday schools for many years and also ward chorister. He was a member of the high council and high priest at time of death. He was prominent in civic affairs af-fairs in San Juan county, serving as county assessor, treasurer and justice of the peace for many years. He married Lucratia Jane Maxwell in 1878; she died in 1926. He married Florence Baron in 1927. Surviving: Kin Surviving are his widow; two sons and three daughters, Maxwell Max-well Black of Provo; Grant Black of Brigham City; Mrs. Amelia Gale of Salt Lake City; Mrs. Lucratia Lu-cratia Whipple of Pima, Ariz., and Mrs. Eva Miller of Hyrum; three sisters, Mrs. Sarah Young of Shelley, Ida.; Mrs. Maggie Rowley of Tooele and Mrs. Eva Farmer of Blanding; 32 grandchildren, 65 great - grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. |
