Show UTAH COUNTY WINS SAFETY PLAQUE Utah County has been awarded a plaque for the most outstanding safety program in 1947. This plaque is awarded by General Motors, donor of all awards in the National 4-H Safety program. Each year, one county in the state is given this honor. Girls in the county who were outstanding in safety work were: Virginia Meldrum, Pleasant View, Utah; Carol Ann Davis, Payson, Utah; Caroline Snell, Spanish Fork, Utah; Nancy War-nick, War-nick, Manilla, Utah. Miss Wanita Pinegar was the State Safety Winner, and received a trip to Chicago. All 4-H club boys and girls in the county were asked to make a survey of their homes for accident and fire hazards. haz-ards. Many hazards have been corrected. Medicine bottles have been clearly labeled and put out of reach of children, matches have been stored in safe places, oily dust cloths have been stored in metal containers, and gasoline has been safely stored out-of-doors. Stairways have been cleared of toys and other articles that would cause a fall. Dark stairways have been lighted, side rails added. Electric outlets and cords have been inspected and repaired, yards have been cleaned and boards with nails removed, broken glass has been picked up. Chimneys have been inspected and repaired. Stove pipes have been inspected, and stoves too close to walls and with no stove board have been checked. Wood boxes have been stored away - from stoves. Weeds and rubbish that would make a fire hazard have been cleaned up. 4-H members mem-bers have taken an interest in keeping younger children off the streets to play so that they wouldn't be hurt by traffic. Demonstrations on safety in the county have been given and two safety floats were displayed in the 4th of July parade. Safety posters have been placed in public buildings. |
