Show It's Ynr business! Decisions to be made by the present session of Congress are of momentous concern to agriculture, business and labor. In a capsule, here are some of the things on which Congress must pass judgment - between now and the Presidential nominating conventions, con-ventions, which start in June: Marshall Plan Questions 1. Shall Congress authorize the entire Marshall Plan, estimated to cost from $17 billion to $25 billion in four years; or shall it reject or modify it? 2. Shall Congress grant President Presi-dent Truman's request for authority author-ity to regiment industry and business busi-ness in peace time? 3. How much will Congress cut the Federal budget, and how much tax relief will it vote ? 4. Will Congress adopt "socialized" "social-ized" medicine or other similar proposals pro-posals to make individuals dependent depend-ent on the Federal government? Congressional action on the Marshall Mar-shall Plan, of course, will affect the tax reduction fight, the size of the Federal budget, and may deter- j mine whether prices shall continue to rise. Tax Reduction Aim Some Congressional groups, although al-though favoring continued aid for AVestern Europe, are committed to paring the Federal budget by a substantial amount, so as to make more room for tax reduction and bring about a reasonable payment on the national debt. Demands for new authorizations for social purposes, together with pressure for additional appropriations, appropria-tions, will increase ad the election nears. |
