Show RAILROAD BUYS NEW EQUIPMENT Purchase of nearly twelve million mil-lion dollars in new equipment by the Rio Grande railroad was announced an-nounced yesterday by President Wilson McCarthy following . a meeting of the Board of Directors. Included are 10 diesel-electric locomotives, 15 streamlined, stainless stain-less steel passenger cars, and 1415 freight cars of various types. The board yesterday approved order for 800 new freight cars to cost $4,053,236 and announced orders previously placed totaling $7,711,706. Largest single item on the list is the purchase of 1000 50-ton droD-door gondola car?! at an estimated esti-mated cost of $4,832,030. Deliverv on the first 500 has already started, start-ed, and the board yesterdav authorized auth-orized mirchase of an additional 500 with delivery scheduled to begin be-gin next Sentember. Other freitrht car purchases include in-clude 100 sintrle-deck stock ca-s. to be built at the company's Burn-ham Burn-ham shops; 250 70-ton flat-bottom gondola cars: 50 70-ton dron-end gondolas, and 15 7000-g-al. 50-ton capacity acid-tank cars. The diesel-electric locomotives on order include three 6000-horse-power 4-unit road engines suitable for either freight or passenger service, bringing the road's total of this type to 18; three 1500-horsepower 1500-horsepower heavy - duty switch engines, and four 1000-horsepower switchers. |
