Show Ranch Proves Its Worth As A Feeding; Ground The Hardware Ranch in Blacksmith Black-smith Fork canyon, an experimental experi-mental area for game feeding operated by the Utah Fish and Game Department, is proving its worth in keeping elk out of the farmers' orchards, Director Ross Leonard stated following a day's visit to the state property. Director Leonard said there were about 350 head of elk, only about 14 of which were big bulls, on the ranch during his tour. He said that almost every cow had a nine-months calf with her. "We made the Hardware Ranch, 6000 acres, into a feeding place for elk in an effort to attract the big game herds from the valuable foothills in the Cache Valley region. We have carried out a feeding program there this winter and to date have managed to keep elk pretty well on state property, eliminating much of the. -trouble with the private land interests," he said. The ranch, located 18 miles up the canyon from Hyrum, is closed to hunting during the regular hunts and used as a sanctuary. All adjacent lands, however, are open, Leonard explained. |
