Show S Labor Saving Increases 5 In 1855 it took 38 hours and 45 minutes to produce an acre of corn. Now it takes five hours and 21 minutes. That the labor saving from farm machinery has been 'jrogresive is shown by comparison compari-son with a more recent year. In 1942 total farm production was more than a third greater than in 1919 although there were 6.5 per cent fewer persons on the farm to accomplish it. In 1942 each farm fed six more persons than 23 years before, and the income per person on farms was 22 per cent greater. To have harvested our 1942 wheat chop by the methods of 1850 would have meant using very able-bodied person in the United States and also importing millions of foreign hands. |
