Show GIFT BUYING SPREE SETTING A RECORD More Christmas shoppers than ever, with pocketbooks at least 10 per cent fatter than last year, jammed the aisles of the nation's stores last wek. They heard organs or-gans pealing out carols, herded their children to visit St. Nick and gaped at sparkling gew-gaws just like last year. With prices up 15 per cent, however, they showed a stronger tendency to "look around" to "find the most for the least." Only one 1947 shopper in 20 says, "Charge it." The rest pay cash. Some $300,000,000 in Christmas Christ-mas Club checks will be handed over still only a third of all such deposits made this year, reports show. |
