Show WORD RECEIVED CONCERNING ' LT. VERNAL BIRD Letter States Plane Shot Down Over Ocean Near New Guinea Further information concerning the fate of Lt. Vernal Bird, son of Mrs. Walter P. Bird of this city, who was reported missing March 12, has been received by relatives from the War Department. Lt. Bird was a pilot on an A-20 Havoc plane and after strafing the target his plane disappeared from formation near Wewak, southeastern southeas-tern New Guinea, the communication communica-tion said. Also, a letter received from Floyd Crandall, who is stationed in New Guinea and who had gathered gath-ered some details concerning the incident, stated that Lt. Bird's plane was shot down over the ocean and only one man of the crew of three was rescued. It was reported that he was on his second mission, having gone on overseas duty in February. |
