Show New Move Will Provide Funds To Study Colds Last August, a non-profit organ, ization was set up known as the Common Cold Foundation to raise and dispense funds for research and investigation for an all-out war on man's most widespread affliction, af-fliction, the common cold. It has been estimated that business bus-iness and industry lose nearly 4 billion dollars annually in production produc-tion and services due to absenteeism absentee-ism caused by the common cold. Dr. Charles M. Hendrix, president presi-dent of the American Research and Education Foundation for test diseases, is the executive director of the foundation. Dr. Hendrix points out that the foundation is trying to find the answer to some of these questions: (1) Is the common cold caused by a virus? (2) Does sudden chilling make normal individuals susceptible? (3) Why do outbreaks ,of colds follow sudden weather changes? (4) Does worry or grief affect the nose and throat tissues? (5) Why do some families have colds every year while some of their neighbors e?,cape? (6) Why do Eskimos in isolated areas develop colds by contact with apparently uninfected visit- ors While most of the experts do not look for a simple solution but feel that a combination of many complicated facts is responsible for this widespread disease, they realize the urgency of the project in view of the fact that there were an estimated 400 million colds in this country last year. |
