Show Fishing Regulations for 1955 ; Season Are Somewhat Changed Utah's .sportsmen c:m look for-1 for-1 ward to many new rules covering ' the 10o5 angling season. Most of ' these are on the liberal side, 1 though some will count as icstric-' icstric-' lions when compared to past years. In a recent two day meeting the State Fish and Game Commission , "opened the gate" for the use of more baits and also cut the daily bag limit for most species of game fish. : Commission action in January I had already set the general game fish season over most of the state ! to begin May 28 and continue I through October 9. The new regulations go into ef-' ef-' feet April 16, annual start of the angling year. Fishing regulations ; for the 1954 season are in effect ; by law through April 15 this year. Following is a brief summary of the commission actions relative to e ... the 1055 angling regulations. Baits were liberalized to include anything but meat and liver and products containing same. Live minnows may still be used only on Scofield, Strawberry and Deer Creek Reservoirs, and Utah Lake, plus several bass waters. Dead trash fish minnows, chubs, shiners, bullheads and suckers may again be used in any water open to angling ang-ling so long as they are caught and killed before using. It remains illegal to transport live minnows at any time (licensed minnow seiners excepted). Artificial lures remain the same as last year, including the restriction restric-tion of only three moving blades on tandem lures. Bag limit and possession limit are one and the same, with a re-duction re-duction of two fish .over the number num-ber permissible last year. It now stands at ten fish, or seven pounds andor one fish', whichever is caught first. It was also ruled that resident children who are not now required to purchase an angling license (eleven years of age and under) may this year possess only four fish or three pounds. Four the first time anglers may include three fish under the seven Inch size limit in the daily bag. This ruling applies to all game fish species except bass and macin-aw. macin-aw. Bass must be ten inches in length and mackinaw fifteen inches in-ches before they may be legally possessed. Separate limits were set for three species, namely grtyling, catfish, cat-fish, and whitefish or herring. Limit for whitefish (or herring) and catfish is twenty pounds or twenty fish. For greyling it is ten pounds or ten fish. Individual limits of each of these three species spec-ies may be kept separate and apart from the limit of trout, bass, and other game fishes. The high Uinta Mountain waters were scheduled to open June 25 and close October 9. Fish Lake, Pan-guitch Pan-guitch Lake, and Navajo Lake will open two weeks later than the general opening, or June 11. Fish Lake closes September 18. Later openings were set for Current Cur-rent Creek, Lake Creek, Whits Lake and Big Creek again this year. Early closing dates will be set for Whits Lake, a section of the Wild Strawberry above Avin-taquin Avin-taquin Canyon and other waters. In each instance the Commissioners Commission-ers recognized trespass problems on private lands in making the exceptions. ex-ceptions. ' Seven Mile Creek above Johnson Valley Reservoir and several other streams tributary to lakes and reservoirs res-ervoirs will be opened to angling May 28 this year. The spring sucker snagging season sea-son on the Lower Provo River was ruled out for 1955. This is the only water where such fishing has been legal. This decision was made to protect an expected run of walleyed walley-ed pike spawners from Utah Lake into the river at the same time the sucker run is on. Both carp and suckers were ruled fair game when taken for noncommercial use by licensed anglers on any water open to year around angling. They may be taken by any means except explosives, explos-ives, gunfire, chemicals, or shocking shock-ing devices. Fishing hours were continued as 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. daily on any water opened to angling. Use of boats for angling remains the same as during 1954. Yellow perch were taken from the game fish list. Several waters were added to those open to angling the year around. They include the following: follow-ing: Bear River Through Rich County, Gunnison Reservoir, Gunnison Gun-nison Bend Reservoir, Delta-Mill-ville Reservoir, Borham Reservoir, Montez Reservoir, Little Bear River Riv-er below Hyrum Reservoir, Otter Creek Reservoir, Piute Reservoir, waters west of Highway 84 in Weber and Davis Counties, Sevier River below Otter Creek, and waters wa-ters west of Highway 91 in Cache County. Anglers are reminded that the 1954 regulations continue effective until April 16 this year. The above new regulations are not effective until that date where they concern waters already open to year around angling. |
