Described as the most modern expanded pipe mill in the west, the plant has been under construction since October 1, 1954. With the principal buildings already up, the plant will have about five acres under roof when construction is completed this year. Other principal structures will be an office building, which will be completed by next summer, and a building to house equipment for (Continued on page 2) . s The Consolidated Western Steel Division of United States Steel Corporation this week announced it will begin production of large diameter, high strength expanded line pipe in early April at its new steel pipe manufacturing plant across the street from the Geneva Works of U. S. Steele Columbia Geneva Steel Division. In a luncheon and preview of the new plant to which newspaper people, peo-ple, county officials, radio, TV and steel officials were invited Tuesday, Tues-day, Charles W. Mr. Lee said equipment on the mill's large diameter pipe production produc-tion line will be hooked up during the next few days to make ready for testing . prior to the start of production of electric weld pipe for Steel Officials Slate Manufacture of Pipe (continued from page 1) the coating and wrapping of small diameter pipe. Another advantage of the new location will be the pipe plant's proximity to U. S. Steel's Geneva Works Consolidated Western's source' of steel plates and coils used in the manufacture of the pipe in the west, it was pointed out. Completion of the new Utah plant will give Consolidated Western Wes-tern two modern electric weld pipe mills for the manufacture of line pipe. The firm's other plant with these facilities in Orange, Texas, will be unaffected by the centralization central-ization of far Western line pipe operations in one location. As in all divisions of United States Steel which pioneered safety safe-ty in industry, Consolidated Western Wes-tern has utilized every safety device de-vice known to the steel fabricating industry in design, engineering and construction of its modern Utah mill, Mr. Lee said. Personnel undergo an intensive training program in safety procedures proce-dures before they go on the job, as part of a continuing job and methods meth-ods instructional course for all employes. About 150 will be on the payroll when production begins in April. This figure will be expanded expand-ed as additional facilities become available. |
