Show iySITCHELU LABDR LEAD ERJS BHD Former President of Mine Workers Succumbs Following Fol-lowing Operation. NEW YORK, Sept. 9. John Mitchell, former president of the United Mine Workers of America and one of the most widely known labor leaders in the United States, died at 3 o'clock this afternoon at the post-graduate hospital. Mr. Mitchell was only 49 years ofage. Although he .underwent an operation ten ; days ago for the removal of gall stones, his condition had been reported as satisfactory sat-isfactory and his death was wholly unexpected un-expected by friends. With Mr. Mitchell when he died were his wife, his son and daughter. Governor Smith, who had called to Inquire about his condition, arrived only a few minutes min-utes after he had breathed his last. His physicians said that while there had been : every reason to expect his recovery, Mr. Mitchell had failed to rally from the operation. Since 1915 Mr. Mitchell had been chairman chair-man of the New York State Industrial commission. He also served as president of the state food commission, chairman of the federal food board, president of the New York state council of farms and markets and as a member of the federal milk commission for the eastern states. His home was in Mount Vernon. |
