Show FRENCH CHAMBER SETSJIH Old Raid Signals Celebrate News of Armistice in London. WASHINGTON, Nov. 11, 5:15 p. m. (By the Associated Press.) Scenes of the wildest enthusiasm were enacted in the chamber of deputies this afternoon when Premier Clemenceau read the conditions of the German armistice. The whole chamber rose to greet the premier, while the galleries, in which was a predominance predomi-nance of soldiers in uniform and women, cheered for several minutes. Prolonged cheering greeted the announcement an-nouncement that Alsace-Lorraine would be occupied and the name of Marshal Foch, as signer of the document, was lustily received. PARIS, Nov. 11. Premier Clemenceau received the newspaper men this morning, addressing them as follows: "This is a great pleasure to receive you. I thank you for the visit. "The armistice was signed at 5 o'clock this morning, Germany accepting all the conditions with slight modifications. We have to be very careful about the food problem in Germany. We cannot let the nation suffer famine. We must endure, ourselves, and, at the same time, keep our military superiority. "We have seized all locomotives and other means of transport. The terms of the armistice will be officially announced this afternoon in the chamber of deputies. Thank you, gentlemen. France has done wonderfully through four long years." As soon" as the official announcement was made of the signing of the armistice all official buildings, embassies and legations lega-tions in Paris were bedecked with flags, and church bells were rung. Workers from offices and shops formed processions proces-sions which paraded through the principal princi-pal streets of the capital. The marchers sang allied national hymns and carrired allied flags. LONDON, Nov. 11. 10:55 a. m. News of the signing of the armistice soon became be-came known to those persons in the center of the city as flags were immediately flown to the breeze, and the issuance of evening newspapers, for which there was a great rush at 11 o'clock. The first official offi-cial celebration came when the old air raid signals were fired from all police and fire stations. A gi eat multitude waving flags appeared ap-peared before Buckingham palace shortly short-ly before noon and cheered until the king and queen. Princess Mary and the Duke of Connaught appeared on the balcony. The national anthem was sung repeatedly by tho crowd. MADRID, Nov. 11 (Havas agency). The news has occasioned a recrudescence t of sentiment favorable to tho entente. |
