If Germany carries out her threat to close the whole North Sea to navigation, navi-gation, by use of her submarines, in order to prevent Norway, Sweden and Holland from obtaining foodstuffs from the United States, it will be, difficult for the people of the countries mentioned men-tioned to keep out of the war. They have all trade. 1 with Germany ever since the outbreak of hostilities, and Sweden has been placed in the list of pro-German countries. But under agreements made with the authorities at Washington none of the products exported from this country will find their way into Germany and certain other restrictions have been placed upon the trade of the Teutons with the neutral nations of northern Europe. Eu-rope. So the government of Berlin proposes to retaliate upon the Norwegians, Nor-wegians, Swedes and Holland Dutch by sinking their food ships as fast as they come into the North Sea. This will not harm the Americans or the Entente Allies, but will cause much suffering among the innocent neutrals. Just now tho Germans seem to be laboring under the imnression that they can whip the whole world since they treacherously treach-erously put Russia out of the war, and they also seem bent on aggravating as many nations as possible. Some of the conceit may be taken out of them before the beginning of the next year and they may not be so ready to make threats against their neutral neighbors. In addition to the threat of closing the North Sea Germany has been treading tread-ing on Sweden's toes in Finland, and if the Swedes only dared they would show their resentment by putting an army into the field.
