Means for tlie murder mur-der of Mrs. Maud A. King being complete'! com-plete'! tomorrow, that counsel asked the court whether a verdict returned by tho .jury on Sunday would be lc;ial. Superior Su-perior Judge Cline ruled that it would. Three lawyers addressed tho jury today.1 to-day.1 and a fourth was in the midst of his aiumeiit when court adjourned. Assistant District Attorney Cooling of Now York, speaking for1 the state today, insisted that tlie prosecution had proved a motive for the death of Mrs. King in its disclosures of the financial operations of Means with the woman's money. The defendant, be said, had dissipated a large portion of Mrs. King's fortune, feared exposure and had carefully planned to take her life in oijder to prevent an accounting. Frank Armfield and L. T. Hartzell of Concord, and E. T. Cansler of Charlotte, Char-lotte, arguing for the defense, said the state had failed to prove that Mrs. King's death"-was not accidental and had been unable to establish a motive. Mr. Cansler, who wns speaking when Court adjourned, said the state had not dealt fairly with Means, and that it actually had concealed the truth from the jury. |
