Show FOOD AND PRICES. After tomorrow the meat packing plants, the canning factories, the flour mills ami the manufactories of all kinds of food will be n ruler direct control of t he government. The wholesalers and jobbers will likewise be under a license li-cense system which will insure reasonable reason-able prices to the retailer, who is not compelled to take out a license. But the consumer will not be forced to pay exorbitant prices if the present plans of the food administration are put into successful operation. The fiat has jione forth that there must be no profiteering upon the part of the retailers; re-tailers; that. the public must be supplied sup-plied with food tit renonab!o prices. Those who fail to heed the warning will be put out of business. This will be accomplished by the food administration administra-tion by the simple process of forbidding the wholesalers and manufacturers from supplying the extortioners with goods on penalty of losing their licenses. li-censes. It looks as though the plan might work out successfully. But the holding down of prices is not all the story. All the families in the Caif ed States have been asked to economise in the use of certain foods in order that our allies may not suffer the pangs of hunger while engaged in the -war for freedom. Tt is- not rlaimed that there is a shortage, of food ."in the Veiled States, for that is un tru. Amenta is still a land of plenty and then; is do d.-ingfr that our people-will people-will evT b: starved out. llut there in a world shortage in wheat and meats and we are asked to ue less flour, purk, beef and mutton. Jt should be ea-v to comply with this request, for we ha vo an unlimited supply of oorn-rm-al, oatmeal, potatoes and vegetables of all kinds. Morn fruit has been preserved pre-served this year lhan ev-.-r before in tho history of the eountry aud tho markets mar-kets are well supplied u ith f ivh of all kinds from river, laku and o'.eau. i It is easy to figure out what a great saving tho families of tho Vnited States can effect in a single week, by even slightly curtailing the une of wheat flour and meats. Let us all sign the roll and then carry nut the provisions of our agreement. Tt is a case of life, and death for our allies and their misfortunes mis-fortunes will react on us unless we do our full duty. Liberty bonds and a big army will not save us. We must conserve our food along the lines indicated indi-cated and ship the surplus saved across tho ocean or wo can not win the war. fn the meantimo wo hope the food administration ad-ministration will be able to keep food prices within reasonable limits. |
