Measures to speed up construction of both naval and merchant vessels in the United States will be discussed at a conference here tomorrow of Atlantic coast steel shipbuilders ship-builders with government officials. Representatives Rep-resentatives of seventeen plants will meet ! with representatives of the shipping board, the labor and navy departments : and the council of national defense. The chief problem facing the government govern-ment and builders in obtaining maximum! production of tonnage is the shortage of , labor. The country's yards, il is declared, de-clared, are in need of 300,000 additional! workmen, who must be drawn from other industries. The shipbuilders will propose that that they be permitted to name a committee to Co-operate with the government In increasing tonnage production. Their proffer will suggest that this committee may be of assistance along the following lines: Adjustment of standardization of shipyard ship-yard wages; Collection, distribution a nd regulation of labor for emergency building; Proper ordering, priority and delivery of shipbuilding materials; Co-ordination and co-operation by the navy and the shipping board with shipbuilders; ship-builders; and Determination of an equitable policy for the adjustment of unfinished contracts to conserve the interests of both the builders build-ers and the shipping hoard. An adjuslment of unfinished contracts is necessary, the builders hold, because some j aids tiiat took contracts at low profits cannot meet high prices now demanded de-manded by kibor. |
