Because of the storm conditions the Layton sugar factory has been forced to suspend a portion of its operations from lack of water. From luO to 200 employees are affected. The factory draws its water supply from the Davis & Weber County Canal company's com-pany's flow. The storm has drifted the canal full of snow, which has frozen, forming a dam at a point five miles southwest south-west of Ogden and about eight miles from the factory. The actual loss of the shutdown is estimated esti-mated at $2500. The syrup on hand Is being worked up, but the slicing of beets has stopped. A large force of men has been endeavoring to break the storm dam, but without success to date. It is expected that it will be several days before the factory is able to resume with the full force. The district between Kaysville and Lay-ton Lay-ton and toward the mountains is completely com-pletely blockaded and residents have been unable to get out. In the memory of old residents, no such conditions have existed for thirty years. In some places the snow is ten feet in depth. The snow lias drifted from the open fields into the roads, making mak-ing traffic impossible. ' |
