Show PRECOCIOUS YOUTHS. Evidently Chicago is not the safest place in the world for the stranger within with-in the gates. Other cities harbor robbers rob-bers and other criminals of high and low degree, but when we read that a man who arrives in the windy city with i $357, the savings of a lifetime, is robbed by three boys in knee pants before be-fore he has time to find a lodging house, we know that a new record for juvenile depravity has been made by these precocious pre-cocious youths and that Chicago is entitled en-titled to a place in the very front rank of cities where neither life nor property prop-erty is safe. Politics is probably to blame, in part at least, for the sorry condition of affairs along the shores of Lake Michigan. The chief of police of Chicago recently resigned as a result re-sult of charges brought by the state's attorney, and the mayor, who upheld the chief before election, has been compelled to change his attitude by the force of public sentiment. Whether any good results remains to be seen, but it is certain cer-tain some drastic measures should be taken to prevent school boys in knee pants from becoming rivals of the most hardened criminals in "sticking up" men who come to the city with the savings of a lifetime in their possession. |
