Show VARSITY GRID WARRIORS ARE IRK HARD Coach Norgren's Hopefuls Respond to Call, but Not Yet in Sufficient Number. MUCH TOO EARLY TO TALK OF CHAMPIONS Available Material Promises Prom-ises to Give Utah Strong Eleven ; Strenuous Training Train-ing on Programme. After the first practice of the year for the University of Utah gridiron candidates, can-didates, which was held Tuesday afternoon, after-noon, the srpiad has been growing by the addition of one or two daily. However, How-ever, tbe number out has not been as large as f'oacb Norgren believes it should be. Many of the old players who promised to return for tbe first workout work-out have not ot done so, and this fact lias been sufficient to arouse the ire of the fiery, energetic coach. But despite the delay on the part of some, the practice during tbe past week has given the Crimson eleven tbe start on most of the teams In the Rocky Mountain conference, and this is the very thing Xorgren has been working for. During the past two or three years the material has not been so experienced as in many past years. For this reason the coach believes that there must be plenty of real hard work right down close to mother earth, with both dignity and ease cast to the winds. Plenty of Work. 1 Those who have been out have been given lots of work to do, and none of them has attempted to avoid it. This fact alone is the biggest point in favor of Utah bringing down the Rocky Mountain conference championship. Only ten or eleven men have been out, and those who return later will be forced to jump real spryly to catch up with the early birds. Neither Coach Norgren nor John Breathed, the new assistant coach, will talk of championships. Such things are loo far iu the visionarv future for them, and. above all else, these two disciples of Coach Stagg keep down on earth, where there is football practice work. It is always work with them, but it ia not hard to imagine that sometimes they have allowed themselves to think of -a 1915 championship, else why so much of this work, anyhow? Football Material. Among those of the varsity or freshman fresh-man teams of last year who are expected ex-pected to come together shortly for advanced ad-vanced instruction, are: Mclntvre, captain cap-tain and tackle; Carroll Gardner, halfback; half-back; Mark Gardner, fullback; Brok-meyer, Brok-meyer, tackle;. Romney, halfback; Mar-thakis, Mar-thakis, guard; Van Pelt, end; Skolfield, guard; Parry, end; 'Crouch, guard; Douglas, end ; Ming, center; Warner, tackle; Ward, halfback; Breckon halfback; half-back; Steve Love, quarterback. In addition ad-dition to these, Howard Rovster, an eastern man of much football experience, experi-ence, is out for the team. Many other promising men will undoubtedly turn out for the varsitv eleven when instruction instruc-tion begins, but those mentioned possess ability sufficient to be welded into an invincible machine. Only hard practice is needed, and that is assured. The workouts have consisted .of work with the forward pass, light bac.kfield practice, falling on the ball, blocking. crawling on hands and knees, rolling as a log is rolled, exercises of a gymnastic gym-nastic nature anil then two or three times around. This latter, the marathon stuff around the university 440-yard track, ends the practice, and the players put on all speed ahead for the showers. But footbalj men in this part of the country 'have seldom been noted as distance dis-tance runners, especially tired football men, and there is little work, fight or anything else left in them bv the time the training quarters are reached. Coach Norgren 'a hopefuls have been hitting the covers rather early each night during dur-ing the past week. Plans for Freshmen. Nothing has been done yet toward the formation of a freshman team, and probably nothing will be done in that direction until the university actually opens. Rut a strong freshman eleven is part ot' the plans for the coming foot- ball season, and when the infants arA once organized into a team, it is very likely that there will be no letup in training until Thanksgiving day. The freshmen will be expected to give the varsity the bulk of its scrimp mage practice this fall, but in the mean-' time an attempt will be made to arrange ar-range games between the Crimson eleven and some of Ihe high schools. Xorgren would like to hold a practice with one of the Sail Lake high school t cams about September 24, but no arrangements ar-rangements have yet been made for such 0 prnctice game. |
