Show CANDIDATES FOR THE WMM FIELD Richard P. Morris and W. Mont Ferry Make Formal Announcements. PARK WILL NOT RUN Statement of Withdrawal Accompanied by Appreciative Appre-ciative Expressions. Immediately following the statement issued yesterday by Mayor Samuel C. Park that he would not be a candidate for re-election, announcements were made by Commissioner Richard P. Morris Mor-ris and Senator W. Mont Ferry of tbeir candidacies for the mayoralty. Mr. Morris announces his candidacy in a formal statement and in behalf of Mr. Ferry a petition of candidacy was filed yesterday with City Recorder Karl A. Scheid. The announcement o Mayor Park that he would not be a candidate for reelection re-election appears to have been taken in the nature of the opening of the municipal munici-pal campaign. Up to the present time the interest of the public in the approaching ap-proaching campaign has been lagging. It is probable now, however, that within with-in a short time headquarters for various candidates will be opened and an active campaign begun to stimulate interest in the approaching primary and city election. Four to Be Elected. At tho election this year a mayor, two commissioners ami an auditor are to be chosen. TTie mayor and commissioners will serve four years and the auditor two years. The salary of the mayor is $4200. that of commissioners $3600" and that of auditor $2400. At the primary election two candidates for mayor, four candidates for commissioner and two candidates for auditor will be chosen. The voters at the city election will choose their officers from among the nominees selected at the primary election. elec-tion. The primary election will be held on October 19 and the city election on November 2. As yet there appears to be a dearth of candidates for the various poeitions to be filled. However, it is certain that w'ithin i he next two weeks there wi II be a lar- number in the field. The Socialist So-cialist party already has its list of caD-1 caD-1 didates in the field, but it is not regarded re-garded as probable that any of the other oth-er party organizations will put a ticket in the 'field. Some of the Republican party workers have been urging the calling of a convention to name a straight Republican ticket, but no definite defi-nite steps in that direction have as yet been taken. Three Mayoralty Candidates. Aside from the -Socialist nominee for mayor the only candidates to succeed Mayor Park now in the field are Commissioner Com-missioner Morris and Senator Ferry. Mr. Morris has served as city treasurer, member of the city council, mavor and at present is a member of the cfty commission. com-mission. Senator Ferry served six years as a member of the city council and at present is president of the state senate. Former Councilman .T. W. McKinnev is being urged to announce his candidacy for the mayoralty bat has not yet decided de-cided to do so. For city commissioners several candidates, candi-dates, either active or receptive, are mentioned. Included in this list are Arnold Ar-nold G. Giauque, Henry K. Russell, Moses C. Davis, Emil S. Lund and A. A. Herman, who have already announced their candidacies, and City Auditor Herman Her-man H. Greene. City Recorder Karl A. flcheid, A. Fred Wey and several others who are mentioned as likely to enter the race. Announcement by Park. E. A. Bock, chief deputy city auditor, will probably announce himself soon as a candidate "to succeed his chief. Thus far no one else has become an active candidate for auditor. Fox several week s Mayor Park ha s bad under consideration the question of being a candidate for re-election. Many ot his friends urged him to become be-come a candidate, but the mayor felt that he would be unable to sacrifice the time necessary to the duties of mayor during another terra. He issued the following statement relative to his position po-sition yesterday: I am not a candidate for nor desirous de-sirous of re-election. Four years ago there appeared to be a contingency wherein the business busi-ness men and voters of Salt Lake City decided that certain changes had to be made and assigned to me a part of the task of making the changes. These things for the most part, and as far as possible within the time at our disposal, have bean accomplished. Appreciates Support. I have enioyed immeasurably the duties which have devolved upon me as mayor of Salt Lake City, the associations and personal Intimacy with the estimable gantlcmen who have occupied the other positions on the commission and, not loast of all, the sterling services rendered by the chiefs of the three divisions of the department of public safety. T am most deeply grateful for the hearty and cordial support given giv-en me from all directions. The last two years have been moBt pleasurable pleasur-able ones and Salt Lake City is Spoken of in the highest terms by strangers who have come within our gaUs during that period. The feeling within the city at the present time and for some time past qas been one of peace, progress and prosperity which was the slogan upon which the original board nf commissioners was elected. To have seen this condition prevail and to have helped to bring it about is ample reward for any sacrifice which may have been necessary to fill the office. On account of the limitation of time and the demands upon my health I desire to be relieved. I am profoundly grateful to the people peo-ple of Salt Lake City for the confidence con-fidence they have reposed in me and hope that it will be their judgment judg-ment that f have faithfully diu charged mv trust. Signed) SAM TILL C. PARK. Soon after announcement had been rrade that the mayor would not be n candidate for re-election Commissioner Morris made the following statement over his signature: In anuounciug my candidacy for the offie,e of mayor of Salt Lake City, I desire to state that 1 stand on the platform upon which I was elected commissioner four years ago, . and roly upon the record of the city commission in carrying out the policy then announced to secure for me the sarao ctaai .'Lcter of support that was successful then. While I appreciate the assistance of any individual or organization interested in the national enforcement enforce-ment of law, tho continuance of peace and progress, tho securing of value received for money expended expend-ed and the extension of public improvements im-provements as rapidly as t.ho finances fi-nances of the city will ermit, I will not be tho candidate of any clique, faction or party to the extent ex-tent of putting myself under obligations obli-gations for support. I believe that tho law creating the commission form of municipal government should be obsorved in spirit as in letter and that tho welfare wel-fare of the whole city and all the people should be the controlling motive mo-tive in the position to which l aspire. as-pire. , RICH ABD P. MORRIS. . Ferry Ts N on-Partisan. The petition of candidacy of W. Mont Ferry was filed yesterday afternoon after-noon with the city recorder. Soon afterwards aft-erwards Mr. Ferry announced hia candidacy. can-didacy. "The petition filed today," he said, I ' ' is the formal announcement Of my candidacy. I am a non partisan candidate candi-date for mayor. I believe that the com mission form of government contem plates a non-purt.isnn selection of officials. of-ficials. Therefore, T am not seeking the indorsement of any political party." In ft formal announcement of his can diduey for commissioner Moses C.
