Show i ' ' ' ' Wild Heaves and Such with this bunch. They simply are outclassed, out-classed, and there won't be enough of them on my club next season to remind anvbodv of 1915." Lee Gooch, the outfielder secured from Cleveland, passed through Portland yesterday yes-terday on his way back to the Forest city. Gooch came west with the reputation repu-tation of being a great hitter, but faded to do much with the stick after joining the Beavers. He had no regrets to offer, nor kicks to make, and said the only thing he resetted and couldn't understand under-stand was his failure to hit in the Coast league. VVha a difference between Gooch and Hammond in this respect, as the latter went hack on his word, whined about net ha vine had a chance to make good, and all that sort of rot. Portland Telegram. Tele-gram. Walter McCredle has signed up another first baseman, who will get a trial. His name is Guisto. and he has been with t he St. Mary's college team for the last three years. Guisto played against the Beavers two years ago last spring, a nd again last spring at Fresno. He is a big. powerful power-ful fellow, who takes a great cut at the ball and drives it a mile when he connects. con-nects. Guisto is a left-hand hitter and fields his position well. He is regarded as a likely looking ca ndidate for Fred Derrick's position if he shows as well as he has In Tils games against Portland. Port-land. . MAYBE BIGGER BALL PARK. There is reason to believe that the Salt Lake cluo will have a bigger and much improved ball orchard in which to wtn the Coast leasrne pennant next year. A group of prominent residents of Salt Lake are endeg vorlng to obtain the options op-tions on the Heath and Walker interests in what is broad ly known as Majestic park, which were held by the Majestic Park company and which have been leased. If they succeed in doing so. they will organize a company to take over the land owned by the t wo interests referred re-ferred t n and t he baseball plant, with the prima ry object I n view of provid I ng a permanent ball park for the Salt Lake club. Among others who have signified their willingness to participate in the new deal are F. S. Murphy. M. R. Evans. E. Conway Con-way Ashton. Colonel Lnwrenp Greene. R. T. Badger and S. A. Whitney. The hall club itself would also become a shareholder In the company. Mr. Whitney, on account of his position posi-tion as cashier of McComlck'a bank and because his office is convenient; has been selected as trustee in the undertaking. The project has not yet advanced far enough definitely to discuss details, hut those who are Interested behove it will be successfully put through. in ihe event that the deal is successful, success-ful, the hall club and the patrons will become beneficiaries to (lie extent of (Continued on Following Page.) Aftor that hope-inspiring generosity, gen-erosity, however, the ball cut the heart every time. That Johnny Kane-Swede Risberg combination is a tough nut to crack. The pair Is continuing the doings at Portland which thay started here. . NOT MAC'S YEAR. Special to The Tribune. PORTLAND. Sept. 15. "It la not the salary limit that I am kicking about, but the manner In which the Coast league Is run," declared Walter McCredle this afternoon, when shown n dispatch from California to the effect that .Judge McCredle Mc-Credle charged that San Francisco and Vernon were exceeding tiie salary limit. "The Coast league is paying interest on a useless park in Oakland. It has taken over the debts of the Sacra men to club, and is paying them off. II has saddled itself with a lot of added expense In this manner. 'As to salaries. have no kick. 7 guess I am paying as much as anyone. Kahler draws h big stipend. So do Fisher. Fish-er. Carlsch, Krause and others of my players. I liave bad n score of players In my efforts to turn out a good hall club, but it wasn't my yea r. None of my combinations worked out." Risberg handled eighteen pu touts at first yesterday at Portland without a miss, and Berger accepted thirteen chance,a at short without one boot. CLEVELAND. Ohio. Sept. 15. If Danny Shay's Kansas City Blues ever had a chance to land In the first division di-vision this season It proba bly has heen hlasted for good now, for. Pan. in reviewing his players today, found that he is in need of an ambulance, in which to carry around the sick and injured in-jured on the club. An examination tonight revealed the fact that Eddie Faye is suffering from a broken arm. On top of this Harrv Hi rich man has been sent home, carrying along a case of pleurisy, while "Flame" Delhi also Is on the sick list. Several of the other players are bunged up in some ma nner. With tw;o of his regulars out of Ihe game Shay announced today that he has signed Charley (Trench to fill the gap at second base for the remainder of the season. One of the eccentricities of the schedule sched-ule has been the fact that Portland has only been in Sau Franciscb three t hues during the seven months. However, on each occasion, the Oreyonians remained there for two weeks. Some ma n agora when they are down and out will still try to deceive the public, pub-lic, even if they are not deceiving themselves, them-selves, There Is alwavs to he found the manager who will make excuses. But Welter McCredle is no alibi man. and he states frankly that the Beavers do not figure in the Coast league. "VW have a brand new ball club next season," declares Wa Iter. "I'm finished I , I Wild Heaves and Such. 4 ! f (Continued From Preceding Page.) having an enlarged Hold, additional bleachers and other improvements. For one thing, the (eft-field foul fence will be lengthened. There has also been talk of moving the grandstand back and turning turn-ing il somewhai in order to avoid the sun-hold in left. Moving I he huge grandstand, however, would prove n task of great magnitude, and some other way out of the difficulty may be found. |
