Show ALIEN LABOR LAW. The Arizona lawT making it a crime for an employer of more than five workmen to employ less than SO per cent of qualified electors or native-born native-born citizeus has been appealed to the supreme court of the United States. The court below held the law unconstitutional. uncon-stitutional. The case is one of great importance, affecting, as it does, the rights of aliens, which in some cases are protected by treaty. We do not know what the opinion of the supreme court will .be, but we believe such laws to be wrong in principle. There is a national alien labor law, which, if enforced, en-forced, would furnish all the protection protec-tion necessary, and we do not think the people of Arizona were justified in passing such a restrictive measure. If we curtail the rights of foreigners in this country we shall receive the same treatment abroad, and deservedly so. |
